Localization of intracellular calcium was demonstrated by precipitation with potassium hexahydroxoantimonate in the fixation medium containing osmium tetroxide or osmium tetroxide and glutaraldehyde. The presence of calcium in the precipitates was confirmed by X-ray microanalysis. Cells from active prothoracic glands contain more calcium deposits than inactive glands. The calcium precipitates are mainly localized in the nucleus, in the smooth endoplasmic reticulum, in the hyaloplasm and to a lesser degree in the mitochondria. These findings are consistent with the proposed role of calcium in the stimulation of steroidogenesis.
