SYNTHESIS, PHASE-STABILITY AND SUPERCONDUCTIVITY OF PB-DOPED AND PB-FREE BI-2223

Synthesis, stoichiometry and T-c of Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 (Bi-2223) superconductor with a variety of both Pb-free and Pb-doped compositions and with variable Ca/Sr- and Bi/(Ca+Sr)-ratios is reported. All the samples were prepared by a novel synthetic pathway involving two precursors, (Bi,Pb)(2)CuO4 and Sr-2. xCaxCuO3. Phase-pure 2223 can be prepared from stoichiometric compositions without resorting to off-stoichiometric compositions containing excess of Pb, Bi, Ca and Cu. T-c of 2223 phase is weakly dependent on composition and heat treatment conditions.
