Whereas the decisions of the Appellate Division and Supreme Court provide some of the relevant facts of the Michaels case, they provide little information about the school, the investigation, and the resulting accusations. This article provides the history of the case from Michaels's arrival in Maplewood, New Jersey, through the decision of the New Jersey Supreme Court. Such information is important to the discussion of the amicus brief as well as the commentaries. As the copious citations to the 33,000-page trial transcript and other materials in the record reveal, the information presented herein is grounded in the record and generally has not been subject to dispute.
