A new four-flux model of axisymmetrical radiative transfer is proposed. By considering an idealized model of the radiant cell of a multipass process gas heater, a novel method of reducing the four-flux model to a two-flux form which makes approximate allowance for two-dimensional radiation is introduced. The treatment is applicable to any axisymmetrical system in which uniformity of velocity and concentration in cross-sections normal to the axis of symmetry may reasonably be assumed. To test the accuracy of the new two-flux form, numerical calculations have been carried out with data typical of an operating heater, and compared with zone method predictions for the same situation. Process gas, furnace gas and tube surface temperature distributions produced by the new two-flux method show reasonable agreement with those predicted by the zone method of analysis.
