Based on the analysis of the pertinent literature, it is shown that at present there exist various incompatible opinions concerning the compressibility effect on the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability development both in hydrodynamics and in magnetohydrodynamics. Reasons leading to the discrepancies are revealed and it is shown that the compressibility results in destabilization of tangential discontinuities.
