SOLUBILITY OF ACETYL-SUBSTITUTED NAPHTHOLS IN BINARY SOLVENT MIXTURES

The solubilities of two isostructural aromatic model compounds (2-acetyl-1-naphthol and 1-acetyl-2-naphthol) have been determined experimentally in five binary mixtures of hydrocarbons (cyclohexane, hexane) with alcohols (ethanol, 1-butanol), as well as in a binary mixture of cyclohexane with heptane from 280 K to 340 K. The results have been correlated by using the classical equation for solid-liquid solubility with activity coefficients estimated by the Scatchard-Hildebrand expression and Wilson's equation. As expected, when the solution exhibits a significant deviation from ideal behaviour, regular solution theory becomes inadequate and Wilson's equation is proposed as a more appropriate correlation. Six systems containing acetylnaphthols-hydrocarbon + alcohol mixed solvents were found to exhibit a synergetic effect of solubility. © 1990.
