摘要：

The author traces the development of rock bits to 1909, the year which marks the beginning of modern-day rock bit technology, and highlights more important improvements that have been made to date. The net effect of the rock bit evolution has been increased performance and reduced drilling costs. As in the past, many future improvements are expected to be minor, with continuing evolutionary changes in design, metallurgy and manufacturing.
