University Reform in Brazil: A Challenge for the Lula Government

The theme of university reform is part of the history of Latin American universities for over a century. Since the Cordoba Reform in Argentina at the beginning of the XXth Century, it became a model of reference for universities in the region. In Brazil, since the 1960s, the National Students Union (NSU) has carried forward this struggle for co-government of the university. In a similar manner the theme of university reform has remained until the present in Latin America in the political memory as a symbolic reference to a university with an academic mission, a social responsibility, and democratic management.
