The large eddy simulation (LES) based on subgrid modeling has been applied to turbulent natural convection in concentric horizontal annuli with a heated inner and a cooled outer cylinder. The unsteady three-dimensional Boussinesq approximated equations were solved using the explicit finite-difference method. The highest Rayleigh number solution obtained was 1.18 x 10(9). The time-averaged temperature distributions and the mean Nusselt numbers obtained here are in reasonable agreement with the experimental results of other researchers. The effects of the number of grid cells and the Smagorinsky constant on the time-averaged temperature distributions and turbulence properties are also discussed.
