This article focuses on the actions individual companies and specific industries involved in metal heating, melting and finish curing operations have taken to achieve greater fuel efficiency or more versatile energy sources. About one-half the companies plan to add alternative fuel systems as back-up or primary energy sources. Equipment acquisitions and process alterations lean heavily toward creating dual-fuel (or fuel/electric) capability and toward recovery of exhaust heat for use in process or environmental preheating. Some recent advances in better fuel and energy utilization within the coil coating industry are highlighted.
