摘要
Retardation in both air and salt water was observed. It was concluded that crack-blunting was not a governing factor in retardation. Fractographic, microstructural, and plastic-zone size changes due to overload cycles have been observed and correlated with the retardation behavior. Plastic-zone sizes measured by interferometry agreed well with those calculated under plane stress conditions. Metallurgical changes in the plastic-zone area that possibly cause retardation are evaluated.
