摘要
The historical analysis of the Rock in Rio music festival (Rio de Janeiro 1985), an event which included national and international bands and singers, allows us to present not only historical data about a completely original social gathering in the form of a mega music festival in Brazil but also illuminating insights into the discourse surrounding the festival itself and an understanding of Brazilian rock music during the period of the 1980s that hailed the return to national political democracy. Moreover the critics of Rock in Rio were members of the Catholic Church as well as figures from the spheres of music and politics, who came out in defense of "authentic" Brazilian music versus rock's "invasion", emphasizing the supposed alienating and alienated quality of rock's structure and influence. Furthermore the article seeks to consider another old-new genre of music during this time of the faltering, first steps of Brazilian political re-democratization.
