A novel series of transition metal complexes derived from poly-(5-vinyl salicylidene)-1,2-diaminobenzene (PVSB) in the presence of pyridine has been prepared as a tridentate and/or bidentate monobasic Schiff base homopolymer of ONN or ON type. The polychelates have been characterized by elemental analysis, H-1 and C-13 NMR, magnetic susceptibility, IR, UV and EPR studies. Stereochemistries are proposed for Co(III), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes on the basis of spectral and magnetic studies. The crystal field parameters (D-q, B and beta) for Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes are calculated and agree fairly well with the values reported for known octahedral complexes. The thermal stabilities of the homopolymer and the polymer complexes were studied by means of thermogravimetric analysis and the activation energies of their degradations were calculated.
