The field experiment was conducted during the winter seasons of 1987-88 and 1988-89 Faizabad, to study the effect of moisture levels and sowing dates on chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) yield. Irrigation scheduled at 0.4 IW : CPE ratio recorded the highest seed yield. Sowing of crop on 30 October increased the seed yield by 4.31, 14.97 and 34.91% compared with yield of the crop sown on 10, 20 and 30 November sowings respectively. The yield attributes, viz. number of branches/plant, pods/plant, grains/pod and 1,000-grain weight accounted for 63 and 92% variations in grain yield during the first and second season respectively.
