EVALUATION OF ENERGY-UTILIZATION EFFICIENCY IN CANADA USING ENERGY AND EXERGY ANALYSES

Canadian energy utilization for 1986 is analysed by considering the flows of energy and exergy through the four main sectors of the economy (residential-commercial, industrial, transportation, and utility). Exergy analysis indicates a less efficient picture of Canadian energy utilization than energy analysis, with approximately one quarter of the exergy and about half of the energy supplying useful end uses. There remains substantial room for efficiency improvement in all sectors, particularly in the residential-commercial and transportation sectors.
