摘要
There were previous attempts to quantify stages in the evolution of the hominid brain: G. Elliot Smith (1928) regarding the temporal area which reaches the latest full maturity in phylogenesis and ontogenesis; Schepers (1949) using Kappers' and Weidenreich's "sylvian angle" from gorilla to man; Geschwind and Levitsky (1968) regarding the speech region (planum temporale). A new method has been developed since 1979, based on the ratio of the allocortical infratemporal plain to the isocortex of the temporal convexity, called "Neocorticalisation Index". Measurements in 128 freshly recovered human brains were analyzed by two competent centers for statistical computation. They reveal group differences with regard to infancy, gender, and phyletic stock (race).
