Porous silica having mesopores of about 3 nm width and narrow pore diameter distribution (PDD) was prepared by the sol-gel method. Oxide films of nominal composition of 80SiO(2) . 20TiO(2) were coated on the porous silica by using partially hydrolyzed complex alkoxide solutions. N-2 adsorption was measured on the uncoated and coated porous silicas and the PDDs were calculated, After coating, larger pores in width decreased and the PDD became narrower. From t-plots, the porous silica after coating contained only mesopores and no micropores were observed. Repetition of the coating procedure had no apparent effect on PDD.
