OSCILLATORY ELECTRIC BIREFRINGENCE CHARACTERIZATION OF POLYMER-SOLUTIONS

The technique of oscillatory electric birefringence (OEB), and its application to the solution characterization of polymers, is discussed. An OEB instrument is described in some detail, with particular emphasis on a computerized data acquisition and processing system specifically tailored for this experiment. In addition, the application of an amplitude-modulated electric field is presented, including an analysis of the errors associated with an improper choice of the modulation frequency. Then, an extensive series of measurements of solvent rotational dynamics in polymer solutions is described and interpreted in terms of an effective solvent friction function. These results demonstrate that the presence of a polymer can exert a strong influence on the rotational dynamics of the solvent, and that in general this effect must be accounted for to interpret polymer solution dynamics experiments correctly. Finally, the principle of a binary solvent mixture with zero net birefringence is advanced, and its application illustrated for OEB measurements of polystyrene in carbon tetrachloride/chloroform mixtures.
