The CCITT X.130-series of Recommendations at present provide a definition of the various quality of service parameters and specify the objectives for each of them for public data networks. It is anticipated that these will continue to be developed, with consideration being given, in particular, to means of measuring the various parameters and to the use of higher speed lines both within and between networks. It is expected that similar Recommendations will also be produced in relation to ISDN. It is apparent that consideration will need to be given to the meaning of "busy hour". Possible new network capabilities, such as multicast, can be expected to have implications on network and protocol design and may have performance limits imposed by technology. In each of these areas there can be expected to be a strong impact on teletraffic engineering. © 1990.
