COLOR FILTERS FOR LCDS

Colour liquid crystal displays (LCDs) are manufactured by methods which include the colour filter method, the birefringent effect by electric fields, and guest-host method'. Of these, the colour filter method is more frequently used because of its excellent full-colour capability, visual angle and resolution. Colour LCDs made by the colour filter method were first proposed by Fischer et al.2 in 1972, and brought to the market in the 1980s3. Those currently available are LCD panels using thin film transistors and colour LCDs which are a combination of LCD panels using super twisted nematic and colour filters. The market for colour LCDs will continue to expand because of continuing development efforts. Characteristics and structures of colour filters, and the production system currently under study, are described in this report.
