EXCIPLEX AND CHARGE-TRANSFER COMPLEX FLUORESCENCE IN THE INTERMOLECULAR AND INTRAMOLECULAR JET-COOLED EDA SYSTEMS

The exciplex fluorescence was observed in the excitation of the van der Waals complex between 9,10-dicyanoanthracene and naphthalene in supersonic expansion, where no significant vibrational energy dependence was observed in the transformation of the complex to the exciplex. In the jet-cooled intramolecular EDA system of (9,10-dicyano-2-anthryl)(CH2)3(1-naphthyl), very broad excitation and diffuse red-shifted fluorescence spectra were observed. The red-shifted fluorescence of the jet-cooled intramolecular EDA system seems attributable to the emission of the intramolecularly interacted charge-transfer state formed in the ground state. In inter- and intramolecular systems of 9-cyano-10-methylanthracene/naphthalene and (9-cyano-10-anthryl)(CH2)3(2-naphthyl), neither vdW complex nor charge-transfer interaction was detected in both the ground and excited states.
