QUANTITATIVE XPS ANALYSIS OF THE OXIDATION-STATE OF CERIUM IN PT-CEO2/AL2O3 CATALYSTS

Four CeO2/Al2O3 (2, 5, 12, 25 wt% CeO2) were prepared and impregnated with 0.2 and 2 wt% of platinum. They were calcined under air at 400-degrees-C, reduced under hydrogen up to 700-degrees-C and re-oxidized at room temperature and 400-degrees-C. All treatments were performed in the preparation chamber of an X-ray photoelectron spectrometer. A thorough analysis of the XPS Ce 3d spectra was performed in order to get quantitative results on the extent of reduction of CeO2. Depending on the sample and the conditions we could discriminate between CeO2-x Species, very easy to oxidize and more stable Ce + 3 species which were attributed to CeAlO3 in agreement with previous studies. The results are discussed in terms of their relevance to automotive gas conversion.
