摘要：

The main processes involved in the genesis and natural history of atherosclerotic plaques in the context of the fatty streak and the mature fibrolipid plaque are described. The importance of plaque injury and instability in the pathogenesis of acute thrombosis is stressed and the features associated with unstable plaques are identified.
