ACUTE SINUSITIS AND FEVER IN THE HIV-POSITIVE PATIENT

The aim of the study was to investigate the significance of fever in the hospitalized HIV positive patient with acute sinusitis. Only patients with acute sinusitis and fever were included in our review, which necessarily limits our conclusions concerning the general clinical course of acute sinusitis in the HIV positive patient. However; a strong association was found between prolonged fever and systemic opportunistic disease. Prolonged fever in the setting of acute sinusitis that has been appropriately managed most likely indicates the presence of an acute systemic opportunistic disease, and not an insidious complication of sinusitis.
