Natural rubber can be epoxidized to any desired level so that a range of properties is obtainable. We report studies of the friction of this modified rubber. An aim was to see how the variation in glass transition temperature afforded by different degrees of epoxidation bears upon frictional behaviour and whether data could be transformed by using the WLF equation. Measurements of sliding friction were against tracks of wavy-surfaced glass. The results show that the tribological response of epoxidized grades broadly varies according to their glass transition temperature. The change in properties brought about by epoxidation opens up a range of new uses for natural rubber.
