TOUGHENING OF HIGHLY CROSS-LINKED THERMOSETTING RESINS BY BLENDING WITH THERMOPLASTIC POLYETHER IMIDE

摘要
A tetrafunctional epoxy resin and a thermosetting bismaleimide resin were modified by adding a thermoplastic polyether imide, commercially available as Ultem 1000. Dynamic-mechanical data and electron microscopy analyses demonstrated that a two-phase system was obtained in both the cases after the curing and postcuring processes. A marked increase of the toughness parameters K(c) and G(c) was found for both the epoxy and BMI-based blend systems. The toughening effect has been interpreted in the light of the fractografic analyses performed by scanning electron microscopy.
