Industrial heritage in Brazil

The recent expansion of the concept of heritage has awakened interest in forms of urban architecture that have not previously figured in the canon: such as industrial complexes or workers' housing schemes from the early 20th Century. The recognition of their cultural value affects international, national and local legal frameworks, as a result of the responses of communities and, above all, the management mechanisms and models of intervention employed. This article analyzes the recent cultural re-evaluation of industrial heritage, and analyzes six important examples from Brazil.
