摘要：

The existence of a new illusion of apparent length is announced; it has the same relation to the Brigner-Kauffman illusion of apparent length as the Craik-O''Brien illusion of apparent brightness has to Mach bands. Insight concerning the formal analyses performed by the visual system in regard to the processing of luminance may reveal the existence of analogous processing with respect to other visual phenomena.
