Despite the chronic and recurring nature of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, these two disorders can present acutely as true medical emergencies. The urgent complications include both intestinal and extraintestinal disease. The successful management of such emergencies will depend on early diagnosis and the judicious and timely use of both medical and surgical therapy.
