The reaction between sulfur dioxide and calcium oxide, pertaining to atmospheric fluidized bed combustion, was investigated using thermogravimetric analysis, IR spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction, at 600-900 °C and with SO2 concentrations of 0.1-0.9% in N2. The reaction was observed to have a non-zero SO2 reaction order, and in general the rate of reaction decreased with increasing temperature; CaSO4, CaSO3 and CaS were identified as reaction products, and a consecutive reaction mechanism is proposed with CaSO3 as a key intermediate. © 1990.
