Laser photolysis time-resolved diffuse reflectance techniques were employed in the study of the photochemistry of stilbene and other aromatics on the zeolite NaX. Photolysis of either cis- or trans-stilbene in the solid inclusion samples leads to the rapid monophotonic formation of the stilbene radical cation; interestingly, both isomers lead to signals that agree with their assignment as the trans-stilbene radical cation. The photochemistry of naphthalene and 1,1-binaphthyl are dominated by their triplet state, although small yields of radical cation (naphthalene) and electrons (1,1-binaphthyl) were also observed. p-Terphenyl was the only substrate for which some of the radical cations appear to originate from a triplet process.
