Segregation has been studied using Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (SIMS). A number of effects were observed which affected the ion yield of deuterium from the surface. Chief among these are diffusion of deuterium to the surface during sputtering, segregation to regions of high solute oxygen concentrations, trapping at ion damage regions produced by sputtering and segregation to surfaces. Surface segregation extends over distance on the order of 50 nm and have a maximum concentration enhancement of about 100.
