Structure-properties relationship of irradiated LDPE/EVA blend

Commercial low density polyethylene (LDPE), manufactured in Mexico, with some additives were exposed to gamma radiation in argon atmosphere at room temperature. The selected doses were 100 and 125 kGy. The gel percent and mechanical properties were measured for irradiated and unirradiated samples at 298, 373 and 443 K. Tensile strength and elongation at break, were kept on an acceptable value for the sample irradiated at 125 kGy. The hardness was increased and a 68 gel percent was obtained. All samples were also characterized by DSC, TGA and WAXS techniques to correlate structural modifications with the changes in properties: service temperature, hardness, and tensile strength of irradiated specimens were increased while elongation at break was decreased with radiation dose.
