Trends of cohabitation, marriage and motherhood in urban areas in Argentina

This paper uses recent collected data to examine family formation patterns in Argentina and the extent that have changed among the younger generations. Results show that there is more a change in the form or context rather than in the timing both on union formation and transition to motherhood. Age at union formation has not changed as much as the type of union people form, being before marriage and now unmarried cohabitation. Also, there has not been a significant change across generations on the age at women have their first birth. The main transformation, however, is the context in which motherhood occurs, that is outside marriage and more frequently within cohabitation or dating relationships.
