A NEW AND SENSITIVE SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION OF PHORATE

摘要
A highly selective, sensitive and rapid spectrophotometric method for the determination of phorate, a widely used systemic insecticide is proposed. The analysis is based on the oxidation of phorate to sulphones and its hydrolysis by acidified potassium permanganate at similar to 100 degrees C to release formaldehyde. The formaldehyde released is trapped in an absorbing solution of phloroglucinol and sodium hydroxide to produce orange red colour which has an absorbance maximum at 475 nm. Beer's law is obeyed in the range 15-100 mu g (0.6-4 ppm) per 25 ml of the final solution of phorate. Other analytical parameters for the determination of phorate have been optimised.
