The Kaiserstuhl coking plant, which went into operation on 1 December 1992, is the most modern in the world. Altogether 120 coke ovens produce 2 million t of coke per year at the lowest possible burden to the environment. The extensive environmental protection equipment alone accounted for approximately 1/4 of the construction figure of just under DM 1.2 billion. Comprehensive automation measures and a considerable degree of rationalisation made it possible to achieve favourable industrial conditions working with the low pressure interlinked gas grid system. Putting the entire plant into operation was not without problems. By contrast, the biological treatment plant for wastewater from the coking plant, a novelty in itself, was commissioned without any major hindrances. Numerous optimisation measures as well as design changes have ensured smooth operation so that proof of the performance capability can be prepared and documented under full production. These proofs will demonstrate the quality of the installed technology as well as the performance capability of the coking plant and the coke oven in particular with its newly developed heating system.
