A method has been proposed to determine the critical current density (J(c)) from remanent magnetization measurements for type II superconductors. The method provides a consistent measurement of J(c) to Bean's original assumption in the critical state model. The temperature dependence of J(c) can be easily obtained from this method. As an example, the temperature dependence of J(c) in a single crystal of Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oy has been determined and discussed.
