摘要
The rapid inhibition of squalene synthetase (EC 2.5.1.21) activity, and hence phytosterol biosynthesis which precedes the induction of sesquiterpenoid phytoalexin accumulation in elicitor-treated cell suspension cultures of tobacco, is not accompanied by a reduction in 2,3-oxidosqualene-cycloartenol cyclase (EC 5.4.99.8) activity. This finding provides the first direct experimental evidence to support the proposal that squalene synthetase is the only enzyme on the post-farnesyl diphosphate span of the phytosterol biosynthetic pathway to be inhibited in elicitor-treated cultures of solanaceous plants.
