THE EFFECT OF CONCENTRATION OF SOME INORGANIC ADDITIVES ON THE RADIATION CROSS-LINKING OF LOW-DENSITY POLYETHYLENE

摘要
LDPE samples containing various concentrations of inorganic additives (SiO2 and TiO2) and irradiated by a 60Co source have been investigated. For values of the concentration below 0·5 volume % the crystallinity of the samples increases almost independently of the irradiation dose, and the gel fraction content and the modulus of elasticity decrease with increase of the concentration for a fixed dose. Above 0·5 volume % the crystallinity decreases and the gel fraction and the modulus of elasticity increase. The behaviour of those characteristics with change in concentration of the additives is explained by the different role of the particles in the different stages of their effect on the structure of the polymer, which determines the different types and distribution of the crosslinks formed by the irradiation. © 1990.
