DETERMINATION OF THE EFFECTIVE CHARGE NUMBERS OF COLLOIDAL SPHERES BY ELECTROPHORETIC MOBILITY MEASUREMENTS

摘要
The effective charge number of colloidal spheres was determined for monodisperse polystyrene latices (91 to approximately 2950 nm in diameter and 1. 0 to approximately 3010 mu C/cm**2 in charge density) by electrophoretic mobility measurements. The fraction of free macroions and/or gegenions ( beta ) in deionized suspension is smaller than unity and decreases rapidly with increasing sphere analytical valency (Z). The relation, log beta equals 2. 61-0. 87 log Z is obtained for the deionized suspension. The beta -value decreases on the addition of sodium chloride. beta for the organic solvent-water mixtures (organic solvents: methanol, ethanol, propanol, 1,4-dioxane, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, N-methylformamide, and N-methylacetamide) is determined as a function of volume fraction of the organic solvent.
