This article reviews India's programme aimed at commercial development of mining for deep-sea manganese nodules. The programme is viewed in the wider context of Indian science and technology policy in general and the ocean sciences in particular, emphasizing major factors which have led to its implementation. The article concludes by detailing some current trends within the programme and likely future options for its development. © 1990 Pergamon Press plc.
