X-RAY PHOTOELECTRON SPECTROSCOPIC AND IONIC TRANSPORT STUDIES ON AG2O-P2O5 GLASSY SYSTEM

Ionically conducting glasses have been synthesized in the X Ag2O:(1-X) P2O5 system using conventional and twin-roller quenching techniques. X-ray diffractrometric (XRD) and Differential Scanning Calorimetric (DSC) studies have confirmed that these glasses can be obtained in a wide range, X = 0.35 - 0.7 mol % Ag2O content. The dc conductivity of the system derived from the complex impedance measurements, increases progressively with silver oxide content and reaches a maximum value of 2.2 x 10(-4) (ohm-cm)-1 at room temperature with activation energy = 0.50 eV in the sample for which X = 0.70. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and infrared absorption spectroscopy (IR) have been used as probes for understanding the structure of the present glasses and for studying the formation of different phosphate structural groups as the modifier content is systematically varied.
