Relational database management systems provide power, flexibility, and ease of use to end-users in implementing analytical models for business operations and management decision making. These systems provide, not only an efficient means of information management, but also a powerful language facility which can be used for analytical programming in solving complex problems including optimization. Conventional programming languages lack such a comprehensive environment for tightly integrating data files and file processing facilities. As an example of the power of database systems, we have implemented the simplex algorithm in a dBASE program. We have also included a listing of the program as a service to users who might like to adapt it for their own related applications. The output from the model includes a maximization (minimization) problem as well as a case in which there is no solution.
