The structure of an intercalated fluid is determined by the competition of the interactions of intercalated particles between themselves with those due to the host lattice. The pair correlation function, g(r1, r2), of an intercalated fluid is rigorously defined on the basis of the spatially varying singlet densities, n(1) (r1), n(1) (r2) by the equation g(r1, r2)=n(2) (r1, r2)/n(1) (r1) n(1) (r2). We show that in spite of strong and rapidly varying fluid-substrate interactions, the pair correlation function so defined is remarkably similar to that of a uniform fluid at the same temperature and density. © 1990.
