Lung Cancer Presenting with Back Pain: A Case of Metastasis

Back pain is usually benign and is often soft tissue originated. But rarely primary or metastatic malignancies may also cause back pain. The most common bone metastases are caused by breast, lung, prostate, renal carcinomas and multiple myeloma. Costa, vertebrae and long bones of extremities are the most affected skeletal sites. The case describes a male patient with adenocarcinoma of the lung who initially presented with mechanical back pain. Given the histopathological findings, the lesion was determined to be an adenocarcinoma. The patient was recommended to receive radiotherapy. Serious disease as the cause of back pain must be considered in cases with certain historical factors (smoking, old age) or when the patient fails to respond to treatment for mechanical back pain.
