HEXAGONAL AND SPIRAL PATTERNS OF THERMAL-CONVECTION

摘要
Using an extension of the Swift-Hohenberg equation including mean flow effects we show numerically that the mean flow accounts for the deformation of straight convection rolls to spirals in the case of a Boussinesq flow. Including also non-Boussinesqian effects we obtain transitions between spirals and hexagons. The results are in qualitative agreement with recent experiments in compressed gases.
