SUPPRESSION OF TERMINATION CODONS IN HIGHER EUKARYOTES

Introduction of nonsense suppressor tRNAs or genes encoding nonsense suppressor tRNAs into cells of higher eukaryotes shows that these tRNAs or tRNA gene products suppress the corresponding termination codons, UAA, UAG and UGA. On the other hand, most of the natural suppression in higher eukaryotes involves misreading of termination codons by major cytoplasmic aminoacyl-tRNAs, while naturally occurring suppressor tRNAs appear to have very specialized cellular functions. © 1985.
