摘要
Background. Bleeding from esophageal varices is a fatal complication of cirrhosis of the liver and often the first siymptom of decompensation. Is there a difference in diagnosing varicose veins in patients with active bleeding and in the general population? Material and methods. In the retrospective analysis 2487 gastroscopies in Laboratory of Endoscopy of Czerniakowski Hospital were performed both in hospital appointment and in one-day hospitalization (a referral from family doctors). Results. In patients with gastrointestinal bleeding esophageal varices were observed more frequently than in the general group, particularly in alcoholics and people with cancer. Conclusions. Bleeding may be the first symptom of decompensation of liver insufficiency. Varices are diagnosed more frequently among people with bleeding into the gastrointestinal tract. Alcohol abuse promotes bleeding from esophageal varices.
