Aluminium-containing antacids have been shown in numerous reports to stimulate the protective and reparative processes in the gastric mucosa exposed to various irritants and ulcerogens but the mechanisms of these effects have not been elucidated. The current article reviews the most important factors and mechanisms that are implicated in mucosal protection by aluminium containing antacids.
