Subtalar arthroscopy. Anatomy, indications, surgical technique, and results

Arthroscopy is an effective tool for the evaluation and management of pain localized to the subtalar joint.Two to four portals with noninvasive distraction are required for subtalar arthroscopy. Loose fragments, soft tissues, or cartilage can be removed through the small incisions. It also provides a useful tool in treating intra-articular calcaneus fractures, offering a thorough view of the posterior facet of the calcaneus. It opens a new frontier in anatomical percutaneous reduction and screw fixation of Sanders' fractures. Subtalar arthroscopy has proven to be a valuable tool for treating various injuries to this unique joint. Like any other surgical procedure, arthroscopy has certain inherent complications. In the author's experience, these have been uncommon. The published results are promising.
